Bruce Friedrich is Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He is one of the most influential animal rights activists in the world, frequently debating the industries that exploit animals.
Mr. Friedrich will begin with a short talk, and will then participate in a debate with Brown students. Bring a question!
The event is sponsored by the Brown Animal Rights Club and the Brown Debate Union.

Demonstration at KFC this Saturday
KFC and their suppliers are among the most offending companies that abuse animals. Their chickens are raised and slaughtered in a manner that would be illegal for many other species, and even their own animal welfare advisors have complained. Earlier in the year, KFC Canada finally responded to pressure from animal advocacy groups, so this type of action can have a real effect!
Everyone should meet under Faunce Arch on Saturday at 1:00, and we will go to the RIPTA stop from there. BARC has the materials, so all you need to do is show up. Demonstrations are a fun way to get the message out about animal exploitation. Last year we got lots of supportive honks - - bring a friend!
When: SATURDAY, 1:00pm (leaving KFC a little after 3pm)
Where: Meet at Faunce Arch (the KFC is at 805 North Main)

Success for Proposition 2!
On Tuesday, Californians said "yes!" with a 63% majority to support Proposition 2, a historic leap forward for farm animal welfare law. Beginning in 2015, factory farms in California will be required to provide breeding pigs, laying hens and veal calves with enough space to stand up, turn around and stretch out their limbs.
This is an incremental change, but it is progress. Tuesday produced a major victory for all of us who care about what happens to animals, and we thank those who have been working hard to pass the proposition.

BARC Social potluck + film
Scrumptious vegetarian and vegan food, BARC friends all around, and a movie on a big TV - - all of this can be yours!
This Saturday, BARC will be holding a social potluck so that we can all enjoy a good meal and get to know each other a little better. We will also be watching the HBO documentary I am an Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. The event will be held in New Dorm A Room 207 (aka Vartan Gregorian Quad), where we have homey seating and an uncommonly large television set. You are encouraged to bring a dish, although you should definitely come regardless of whether you are able to prepare something. We ask that all food be vegetarian, preferably vegan (please note non-vegan dishes). This event is for EVERYONE in BARC - - even if you haven't been active so far, this is a great time to meet some people and get involved.

What time: Starts at 6:00pm, and we will start the movie around 6:30

Take the Pledge!
The College Veg Pledge is back for its second year, and Brown is among the participating schools! The pledge is sponsored by Students for Animal Rights.
“As a university student, I realize that I am a leader for my generation and an example for society. I am concerned about the suffering of farm animals and the impact of meat production on global warming, the environment, and my health. By signing my name, I pledge to abstain from consuming meat on November 19th, 2008 and commit to exploring a more ethical diet in the future.”
You can take the pledge online, and BARC will be collecting written signatures as well. You can also join the Facebook event, and check out the College Veg Pledge '08 merchandise.

First BARC meeting of the semester
Hi everyone!
The first meeting of the semester will be this Wednesday, September 10 at 7pm in Wilson Hall 105. We'll be talking about leadership and events for the coming year.
I'm excited for a new year of BARC activities, and I look forward to seeing you all!
